COMPANION is pleased to present At The 1876 Johnson House featuring works on paper by Kelsey Blacklock and Stephanie Barlow alongside pieces from the gallery’s collection. The presentation honors the house’s original Victorian Gothic era and celebrates its contemporary appeal after 150 years.
The intimate, residential setting is one of Indianapolis' most recognized and celebrated homes. Colloquially known as the "Castle House," it is a significant landmark in the Irvington neighborhood. Built in 1876 in a Victorian Gothic style, it was originally the residence of Eudorus Johnson, son of Irvington co-founder Sylvester Johnson. The home is known for its distinctive architectural features, including high gables, round turrets with dormers, decorative verge board, and a steeple roof.
Similar to the exterior movements of the house, the contemporary landscape works by Blacklock and Barlow emphasize verticality, arches, and the interplay of soft curves and sharp detail.
