Seris 8 x 10 - Graciela Iturbide Archive

"Most of my work with the Seri Indians in the Sonoran Desert, near Hermosillo, were portraits because their daily life is very limited, nothing happens. The men go fishing, they live in the desert, they make sculptures; the women collect shells and make necklaces, but their life is very austere. So, I had to be with them all the time. At the time, in 1979, there were only five hundred of them left. I have photographs of nearly all the families making themselves up with colors. The portrait of the Mujer ángel 22 is part of this series and was taken during a trip I took with them in the desert because they wanted to show me cave paintings. I don't even remember at what point I took this photograph because after having lived with them for a month, I had achieved a certain familiarity."
