Yuan Hsin-Yuan (b.1991)
Yuan Hsin-Yuan was born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1991. She graduated from the
Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Changhua University of Education in
2018. Her daily art practice often stems from sketches in her notebook. She
records the movements of people around her or images that catch her attention,
and then extracts inspiration for her carvings from these images. She
transforms 2D images into 3D figures such as standing people, people gazing
into the distance, people on boats, people with raised hands, people sitting or
lying down, stripping away overt emotions and excessive ornamentation.
The wooden figures Yuan Hsin-Yuan creates have expressionless faces and wear
simple, plain-colored clothes made from materials such as camphor and birch
wood. The warm, smooth texture and slight aroma of the wood exude a
down-to-earth quality. The lack of facial expression carries deeper human
emotions, while the simple clothing reveals the purest form of humanity. The
tranquil atmosphere presented in her works also embodies a sense of purity and
freshness, which emanates from Yuan Hsin-Yuan, the artist.
