For the 17th edition of the Drawing Now Art Fair,
Lullin + Ferrari presents a selection of new drawings by the acclaimed artist known as
Anne-Lise Coste, now presenting herself personally as
Uruk. This presentation encapsulates the essence of Coste’s artistic journey over the past several years, showcasing her distinctive style and unparalleled ability to combine raw emotion, political commentary, and imaginative exploration.
At the centre of the booth hangs a large-format canvas featuring spray-painted cubic shapes, serving as a representation of Anne-Lise Coste's artistic approach. Bold, unfiltered, and inherently expressive, this piece offers viewers a glimpse into the artist's creative process.
The series
Cellules, étoiles, planètes et galaxies transports viewers into a realm of fantastical imagination. Combining spray paint and pencil on paper, Anne-Lise Coste constructs an otherworldly landscape inhabited by enigmatic objects reminiscent of extraterrestrial artifacts or futuristic inventions. Through vibrant colours and minimalist forms, she invites us to contemplate the possibility of a parallel universe, crafted entirely from the depths of her own head, in the
Spaceship of the mind – as it reads on one of the works from the series.
In response to the challenges of the pandemic in 2020, Coste created a series of
ballpoint drawings on raw canvas that serve as intimate reflections of her disquieted mind during turbulent times. Oscillating between the realms of drawing and painting, mixing names, symbols, mysterious characters and geometric forms, these works capture the essence of anxiety and introspection, offering a poignant commentary on the human experience.
Pastel Industriel unveils a softer, more contemplative side of Anne-Liste Coste's body of work. Through the medium of oil pastels on paper, she portrays ordinary motifs with a touch of melancholic beauty. Flowers, air balloons, and mobile phones coexist in a harmonious juxtaposition, discovering the subtle complexities hidden within the mundane.
In a bold reinterpretation of Miró's iconic style, Coste presents the series
Miró, offering a contemporary perspective on the legendary artist's legacy. Through the medium of spray paint, she infuses Miró's playful aesthetic with a dash of political and art historical commentary, reconsidering the boundaries of artistic tradition.
Coste's affinity for written expression takes center stage in her series of spray paint
text drawings. From provocative statements to personal revelations, her handwritten words are powerful manifestos of her worldview, that engage with themes of identity, solitude, and societal critique.
Lastly, Anne-Lise Coste presents a very recent series of untitled
drawings in colour ballpoint pen. Layers upon layers overwrite each other and converge to create a multi-dimensional narrative. Coste expands her symbolic world and experiments further with intricate patterns.
