Kopač studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb before settling in Paris, where he quickly emerged as a pivotal figure in early Art Brut circles, working closely with Jean Dubuffet to produce Art Brut booklets, while shaping and conserving his celebrated collection. Kopač’s multi-faceted practice—charged with a raw, instinctive energy—spanned poetry, textured canvases and found-object sculptures. Kopač’s works remain landmarks of postwar European art, bridging Croatian modernism and Parisian avant-garde in their unrestrained exploration of form.
