갤러리현대는 프리즈 서울 2025의 ‘부스 B17’에서 추상회화의 거장 정상화(1932년생)와 조각가 존배(1937년생), 동양화와 서양화의 경계를 오가는 김보희(1952년생) 3인의 작품을 선보인다. 이들은 여주, 코네티컷, 제주도의 자연에 둘러싸인 작업실에서 조수를 두지 않고, 수도자처럼 수행하듯 오랜 기간 작업 세계의 깊이를 더해 왔다. 특히 정상화와 존 배는 평면과 입체라는 서로 다른 장르에서 시작하여, 평면의 입체성과 조각의 회화성까지 작업 세계를 확장하며, 공간과 물성, 시간성에 대한 탐구를 이어왔다. 자연 속에서 독자적인 추상, 조각, 구상적 회화의 세계를 창조하여 국내외로 한국 현대미술의 위상을 높이는 데 크게 이바지해 온 세 작가의 주요 작품을 한 자리에 펼치며, 독창적인 세 작가 작업 세계의 조응을 선보인다.

정상화는 ‘뜯어내기’와 ‘메우기’라는 독창적인 작업 과정을 통해 새로운 차원의 평면성을 탐구하는 시적인 작품을 발표하며 국제적 명성을 얻었다. 〈작품 12-11〉(1973), 〈무제 76-8〉(1976) 등에서도 볼 수 있듯이, 작가는 1970년대부터 기존의 강렬한 색채와 거친 마티에르를 사용한 비정형의 앵포르멜식 회화에서 점차 벗어나 평면의 깊이를 탐색하는 방향으로 나아갔다. 그는 색채를 엄격히 절제하고, 철저히 평면화를 추구하면서 자신만의 단색 그리드 회화를 구축하기 시작했다. 이번 부스에 출품되는 주요 작업은 백색의 회화이다. 멀리서 바라보면 각각의 작품이 서로 비슷해 보이지만, 다가가 보면 어느 하나도 같은 게 없다. 같은 백색이라 하더라도 작업마다 구성하는 요소가 달라 격자의 크기와 형태, 색채와 높낮이에 따라 화면의 표정과 색감이 모두 다르게 나타난다.

존 배는 서울에서 태어나 일산에서 유년을 보내고, 1949년 미국으로 이주한 코리안 아메리칸 미술가로 철을 이용한 용접 조각의 독보적인 위치를 차지하고 있다. 작가는 미국의 예술적 토양을 넘어 음악과 미술, 수학과 과학 등 다학제적인 관심사를 발전시켰다. 학제 간의 탐구를 지속해 온 작가는 특히 위상학에 주목하게 되었고, 그 관심은 대표작 〈두 개의 면을 가진 구〉(1976)로 이어졌다. 이 작품은 뫼비우스 띠처럼 시작과 끝의 경계가 모호하며, 구를 관통하는 여러 겹의 통로를 통해 안과 밖의 관계를 유동적이고 투명하게 표현한다. 또 다른 대표작 〈승천, 추락, 생존〉(1987)은 작가가 프랫 인스티튜트 재직 시절, 동료가 겪고 있던 심리적 압박을 목격한 경험에서 비롯된 작품이다. 짧은 철사를 밀도 있게 용접하여 물결치는 듯한 율동감을 만들어낸 이 조각은, 철의 물질성을 가볍게 전환함으로써 보는 이로 하여금 공중에 떠오를 듯한 착각을 일으킨다.

김보희의 회화는 자연과 마주하는 섬세한 감각에서 출발한다. 초기 작업은 전통 한국화에 기반하여 인물화, 정물화, 강변 산수화 등을 사실적으로 재현하며 자연을 일정한 거리에서 관조하는 시선으로 표현했다. 이후 작가는 다양한 채색 수묵 기법을 적극적으로 혼용하면서 동양화 특유의 평면적 묘사에 유기적 요소를 결합해 새로운 풍경 회화를 모색하기 시작했다. 특히 양수리, 충주호반, 제주도 등 국내 여러 지역을 다니며 마주한 풍경을 소재로 한 작업은 구도에 대한 참신한 해석이 두드러진다. 검은 덩어리처럼 단순화된 산과 섬의 형태, 그 주변을 에워싸고 있는 잔잔한 수면은 채색이 배제된 순수 수묵만으로 표현되어 평면 회화에 대한 또 다른 차원의 접근을 보여준다. 때로는 화면에 최소한의 이미지만을 남기고 여백을 강조하거나, 뒤로 물러나는 구도를 통해 시각적 거리감을 재해석함으로써 동양적 풍경 회화를 현대적으로 풀어낸다.

세 작가는 모두 조수 없이 홀로 작업에 몰두하며 자신만의 조형 언어를 구축해 왔다. 이들의 작업에는 오랜 시간 축적된 밀도, 조형에 대한 깊은 성찰, 그리고 예술에 대한 진지한 태도가 고스란히 담겨 있다.

Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present works by three artists at Booth B17, Frieze Seoul 2025: Chung Sang-Hwa (b. 1932), a master of abstract painting; John Pai (b. 1937), a sculptor; and Kim Bohie (b. 1952), whose approach transcends the boundaries of East Asian and Western painting. Each of these artists, through decades of solitary practice in the natural surroundings of Yeoju, Connecticut, and Jeju Island, has cultivated a unique visual language with a focus and discipline of a devoted artisan. Chung and Pai, in particular, began in the distinct realms of painting and sculpture yet expanded their practices to explore the sculptural qualities of two-dimensionality and the painterly qualities of three-dimensionality, delving into space, materiality, and temporality. Gallery Hyundai brings together major works by three artists whose independent realms of abstraction, sculpture, and figurative painting have been shaped in harmony with nature, and whose practices have played a significant role in elevating the presence of Korean contemporary art both domestically and internationally. These works illuminate the resonance among their distinctive artistic worlds.

Chung Sang-Hwa is celebrated internationally for his poetic works that explore a new dimension of flatness through his original process of “peeling” and “filling.” In the 1970s, Chung began to move away from the intense colors and rough textures of the informel style and engaged more deeply with the plane as seen in Work 12-11 (1973) and Untitled 76-8 (1976). He began to establish his signature monochrome grid paintings by retraining his use of color and pursuing flatness. The presentation centers on works in variations of white. At first glance, the works may seem alike, but a closer look reveals the individuality of each canvas. Within the shared tone of white, Chung varies the composition, altering the size and shape of the grids and subtly shifting the tone and relief across the surface.

John Pai spent his childhood in Ilsan, Korea, before moving to the United States in 1949. As a Korean American artist, he occupies a singular position within the field of welded steel sculpture. Pai has developed interdisciplinary sphere of interests encompassing music, visual art, mathematics, and science. He continued to explore cross-disciplinary ideas, such as topology, which shaped works like Sphere with Two Faces (1976). The multiple overlapping passages piercing throughout the sphere create a fluid, transparent interplay between interior and exterior, reminiscent of a Möbius strip. Another significant work, Risen, Fallen, Walken (1987), emerged from his empathy for a colleague’s emotional struggles during his teaching years at Pratt Institute. Short steel rods, welded densely together, form rippling rhythms that create an illusion that the steel sculpture may be light enough to be lifted into the air.

Kim Bohie’s early works are grounded in the tradition of Korean painting, characterized by a restrained, lyrical style of portraiture, still life, and riverside landscapes. These works depict the scenery through a contemplative gaze, maintaining a distance from nature. Over time, Kim began incorporating various colored ink techniques into her practice, blending them freely to introduce organic elements into the traditionally flat East Asian painting—thus opening new possibilities in landscape art. In works inspired by landscapes of locations such as Yangsu-ri, Lake Chungju, and Jeju Island, she offers inventive compositional interpretations: dark, monolithic masses representing mountains and islands are rendered solely in ink wash, encircled by calm, empty water, suggesting an alternative dimension of pictorial flatness. Minimal imagery, generous use of negative space, and subtly receding perspectives reinterpret traditional East Asian landscape painting through a distinctly modern lens.

The three artists devote themselves entirely to their materials and processes, working in solitude to refine visual languages. Their works reveal the passage of time, the insight gained through profound contemplation on form, and an unwavering sincerity and commitment towards art.
