Liao Chao-Hao

YIRI ARTS Taipei is currently presenting Magical Everyday, a group exhibition on view from September 10 to October 31, 2026. The exhibition includes works by Taiwanese artist Liao Chao-Hao.

Liao’s practice explores the relationship between sculpture, site, and everyday material culture. Through casting, inlay, and material translation, he revisits the visual language of local architecture, constructed landscapes, and vernacular ornamentation. Familiar elements such as tetrapods, retaining walls, terrazzo surfaces, temple decorations, and architectural details become more than components of the built environment. In his work, they also reveal collective memory, local belief, and shared ideas of public aesthetics.

His recent Copper-Wire Terrazzo Sketch Project developed from his observations of temples in southern Taiwan, where terrazzo techniques have replaced earlier forms of painted decoration on walls and columns. Using paper pulp as his primary material, Liao reinterprets the methods and appearance of copper-wire terrazzo while redrawing the recurring flowers, birds, plants, and auspicious motifs found throughout these spaces. The resulting works occupy a space between painting and sculpture.

By bringing traditional flower-and-bird imagery into dialogue with contemporary materials, Liao examines how craft enters architecture and public space. He also considers how images drawn from nature acquire symbolic meanings and become part of a community’s shared way of seeing and understanding the world.

In dialogue with Magical Everyday, Liao turns his attention to local surfaces and decorative motifs that often escape notice because of their familiarity. As these images leave their original architectural settings and undergo shifts in material and scale, the memories, beliefs, and cultural imagination embedded within them become newly visible. The magical emerges through these subtle changes to the everyday, revealing how familiar public environments continue to shape perception and cultural experience.
