YIRI ARTS Taipei is currently presentingMagical Everyday, a group exhibition on view from September 10 to October 31, 2026. The exhibition also features works by London-based interdisciplinary artist Karina Akopyan.
Of Armenian and Russian heritage, Akopyan trained in illustration at Kingston University in the UK. Her practice spans painting, works on paper, and wearable sculpture. Drawing from family history, folk traditions, and Orthodox mysticism, she uses intricate lines, bold color, and layered narratives to explore the body, gender, desire, and identity. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Saatchi Gallery and the Parajanov Museum, and is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.
In dialogue with Magical Everyday, Akopyan transforms private interiors, theatrical spaces, and historical memory into symbolic, surreal stages. The magical does not offer an escape from reality. Instead, it magnifies its contradictions. As private desire, collective memory, performed identity, and structures of power converge, the works invite viewers to reconsider how reality is constructed and whose stories are allowed to be seen.
