YIRI ARTS Taipei is currently presenting Magical Everyday, a group exhibition on view from September 10 to October 31, 2026. The exhibition includes works by Taiwanese artist Yan Jheng-Hao.
Born in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1997, Yan currently lives and works in Taipei. He received his BFA from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2020 and his MFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts in 2024.
Working primarily in painting, Yan interweaves personal memory and emotional experience to explore the shifting possibilities of cultural identity. His practice examines the relationships between color and desire, the body and form. His paintings often portray the complex and unspoken emotions of contemporary youth while probing the psychological and subconscious structures beneath them.
Everyday encounters, historical images, figures, and symbolic fragments overlap within suggestive narrative scenes that resist a single interpretation. Moving between intimacy, vulnerability, and psychological tension, his paintings unfold as open and fluid inner landscapes, reflecting the many ways desire shapes interpersonal relationships.
In dialogue with Magical Everyday, Yan considers how familiar reality can be subtly displaced by memory, emotion, and desire. The magical in his work does not arise from supernatural events, but from moments when what is seen no longer fully corresponds with what is felt. As different times and layers of imagery converge, reality becomes a shifting psychological space that invites viewers to reconsider the relationships between selfhood, others, and cultural identity.
