ROBIN FORSTER lives and works in London. He studied at Central St Martin’s School of Art and Goldsmiths, London after a first degree in mining engineering at Leeds University. He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Judin, Berlin; Architectural Gallery, Zurich; and Moma London. Forster is currently working on a long-term commission for the Historic Royal Palaces.
In 2015 Forster visited the Californian desert resort city of Palm Springs and photographed in the gridded streets of the Movie Colony. His interest was sparked by the mid-century houses built for movie stars in the 1950s & 1960s. Because of the stars’ desire for anonymity and privacy, the houses were hidden by substantial laurel hedges.
The series of twelve photographs – focusing on the streets, sidewalks, grass verges and hedges – are graphic in their minimalist clarity and tantalising, as only occasionally is any hint of a dwelling visible.
