STEPHANIE BARLOW

At The 1876 Johnson House

COMPANION is pleased to present At The 1876 Johnson House featuring works on paper by Stephanie Barlow alongside pieces from the gallery’s collection. The presentation honors the house’s original Victorian Gothic era and celebrates its contemporary appeal after 150 years.

The intimate, residential setting is one of Indianapolis' most recognized and celebrated homes. Colloquially known as the "Castle House," it is a significant landmark in the Irvington neighborhood. Built in 1876 in a Victorian Gothic style, it was originally the residence of Eudorus Johnson, son of Irvington co-founder Sylvester Johnson. The home is known for its distinctive architectural features, including high gables, round turrets with dormers, decorative verge board, and a steeple roof.

At The 1876 Johnson House includes five works on paper by Stephanie Barlow. Flower Fragments are the result of Barlow's unwavering relationship with the natural world and paying attention. While cutting flowers from botanical illustrations, she became more interested in the scraps left behind and shifted her focus, letting process lead the outcome. Flower Fragments is a series of 8 delicate collage works that reenact the found scrap compositions.

Flower Fragments were first presented in Barlow’s 2022 solo exhibitionThey Say It Better Than I Ever Will at COMPANION.
Additional available works by Barlow are also listed.

All artworks by Stephanie Barlow are available for sale. Information about artists in the COMPANION COLLECTION is available upon request.
