Laura Limbourg

近期個展包括伊日藝術計劃的《Dragon and His Tale》(臺北,2022)、Taro Gallery 的《Hump in Honey》(布拉格,2022),以及 Nová Galerie 的《Gimme a Big Great Smile》(布拉格,2020)。

YIRI ARTS Taipei is currently presenting Magical Everyday, a group exhibition on view from September 10 to October 31, 2026. The exhibition includes works by Belgian artist Laura Limbourg.

Born in Belgium in 1996, Limbourg graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and currently lives and works in the city. Working across painting and sculpture, her practice examines colonialism, sex tourism, gender, history, and the construction of exoticism. Her exchange at Taipei National University of the Arts in 2020, together with six months spent travelling through Southeast Asia, became an important point of departure for her exploration of power, desire, and cultural perception.

Limbourg brings tropical vegetation, religious iconography, urban street scenes, and female bodies together in vivid, fantastical compositions. Rather than presenting women simply as subjects of the gaze, she positions them as confident protagonists, often accompanied by tigers, spirit animals, floating heads, and mythological figures such as Medusa. Through a bold and direct visual language, she addresses the exploitation and marginalization experienced by sex workers while conveying female agency, resistance, and liberation.

In dialogue with Magical Everyday, Limbourg uses fantasy not as an escape from reality, but as a means of making its underlying power structures visible. As attraction and unease, reality and projection begin to overlap, familiar images of religion, nature, and the body take on new meanings. The magical becomes a way of looking at reality anew, inviting viewers to reconsider gender, cultural imagination, and the ways in which others are seen and represented.

Limbourg received first prize at the 13th Prize of Art Critique for Young Painting, organized by Galerie Kritiků, in 2020. Her recent solo exhibitions include Dragon and His Tale at YIRI ARTS, Taipei (2022), Hump in Honey at Taro Gallery, Prague (2022), and Gimme a Big Great Smile at Nová Galerie, Prague (2020). Her work has also been exhibited in London, Prague, Taipei, and the United States.
