Goshka Macuga’s “Exhibition M: A Re-enactment” (2023-2026) is a mixed-media installation comprising jacquard sculptures and activated through live performance presented as a collaborative project by Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Kate MacGarry and Vistamare at Art Basel Unlimited 2026. The project is inspired by André Malraux’s “Le Musée Imaginaire”, activating historical imagery through sculpture, choreography, and institutional critique. “Exhibition M: A Re-enactment” is a live performance that creates a dialogue around the history and future of museums. Three characters play the part of French novelist and theorist André Malraux, the art historian and former director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Alfred H. Barr Jr. and Macuga herself, their dialogue collapsing temporal and institutional boundaries whilst framing the museum as a site of continual reinterpretation. Macuga depicts herself wearing a masculine suit, referencing a 1954 photograph of André Malraux in his home, surrounded by the pages of “Le Musée Imaginaire” (1947). Numerous elements from Malraux’s original photograph are reconfigured within the immersive sculptural environment. The installation originates from Goshka Macuga’s “Exhibition M” (2019), a monumental tapestry woven on a jacquard loom. Originally commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the work was conceived in dialogue with the museum’s history, collection and institutional narratives.
