The Zantray series—from the Haitian Creole zantray, meaning “entrails”—brings together hybrid works situated at the intersection of sculpture, painting, and assemblage. Gaëlle Choisne brings forth organic and composite forms: mineral matter, reflective fragments, plants, pigments, manufactured and found objects, costume jewelry, and pieces of magnetized ceramic. The work appears as a living material, at once landscape, skin, and archive.

In this piece, the grid occupies a central position. It constitutes an industrial frame, a protected window. Its diamond-shaped pattern initially evokes a fishing net, a form deeply associated with Caribbean territories and with a maritime culture in which the sea is simultaneously a space of subsistence, circulation, and abundance. Evoking collective practices and a coastal economy, the net gathers, captures, and redistributes the resources of the sea.

The grid also evokes structures of material culture and refers to Caribbean clothing motifs: openwork patterns, interlacings, networks, and surfaces that envelop the body. It is both what holds back and what allows through. It contains without entirely enclosing; it filters, selects, and captures. This ambivalence is essential to Zantray, where the material seems to seek a way through the structure that constrains it.

This reading can be related to the notion of islandness (îléité) developed by geographer Joël Bonnemaison. For Bonnemaison, the island cannot be reduced to a geographical condition of isolation: îléité refers to a cultural and symbolic experience of territory, a way of inhabiting a space marked by rupture, but also by the circulations that allow this rupture to be overcome. The island can therefore be understood less as a closed entity than as a network of interconnected places.

The grid in Zantray can be understood precisely as such a network of relationships, recalling Édouard Glissant’s notion of the Tout-Monde (“Whole-World”).

The grid also invokes the history of artistic modernity. In her seminal essay “Grids” (1979), Rosalind Krauss demonstrates the extent to which the grid constitutes one of the emblems of modernism: it asserts the flatness and autonomy of the pictorial field, as well as a desire to detach the artwork from nature, narrative, and representation. The modernist grid thus tends to establish an autonomous, abstract space organized according to its own laws.

Yet in Gaëlle Choisne’s work, this history of the grid is displaced and overturned. The grid is no longer the sign of an autonomous space turning away from the world; on the contrary, it is deeply engaged with the world, with its materials, histories, and relations of power. Where Krauss identifies in the modernist grid a desire to distance the artwork from nature and reality, Zantray reintroduces precisely what modernism had sought to keep at a distance: the body, territory, organic matter, vegetation, memory, as well as colonial history and economies of exploitation.

The grid thus becomes a contaminated structure. It is no longer perfectly regular or neutral: it is traversed, covered, and overrun by matter and materials. The geometric network is invaded by material that seems to grow through it. Abstract form therefore encounters an organic materiality that destabilizes it. The grid no longer fully controls what it contains: it becomes the site of a struggle between order and overflow, capture and circulation, enclosure and proliferation.

This tension resonates with the title Zantray. The “entrails” are what is usually hidden, internal, and buried. Here, they become visible. They rise to the surface in the form of an almost corporeal material, charged with colors, traces, and fragments, thereby delineating a territory, a visual geography.

The synthetic hair refers to practices of hairstyling and bodily transformation within Afro-descendant cultures, but it also evokes something much more everyday and trivial: a strand of hair that has fallen, been abandoned on the floor, and become waste—an autobiographical moment.

The hair thus becomes a remnant of identity. It retains something of the body while being separated from it. It is both presence and absence. Its synthetic materiality adds another dimension: it is also a material that is produced, transformed, and purchased. The body itself appears caught up in economies of representation, beauty, consumption, and transformation.

This transformation also concerns the miniature photographs enclosed in small pouches. These tiny containers introduce an economy of secrecy and value. They may evoke transportation, commerce, and preservation, but also clandestine circuits, notably drug dealing and trafficking. The photographic object thus becomes caught in an ambiguity between intimate memory and commodity, archive and product, memory and exchange value.

The pouch therefore becomes a particularly powerful metaphor for the negotiation of identity. What is contained can be displayed or concealed; what circulates can be transformed according to context. Identity itself appears as something that one transports, displays, protects, or negotiates. The miniature photograph does not restore a complete identity: it preserves only a fragment of it.

Thus, the grid in Zantray is simultaneously a fishing net, an island network, a fence, and a modernist device. It condenses several histories and several regimes of representation. It carries the promise of abundance while recalling mechanisms of capture, ownership, and exploitation. It evokes the island as a space of rupture while simultaneously drawing a network of circulations—a cartography of the Tout-Monde, an affective and material map of circulation. Finally, it takes up a central form of artistic modernity while charging it with a situated, Caribbean, and postcolonial history.

La grille évoque également les structures de la culture matérielle et fait référence aux motifs vestimentaires caribéens : les motifs ajourés, les entrelacements, les réseaux et les surfaces qui enveloppent le corps. Elle est à la fois ce qui retient et ce qui laisse passer. Elle contient sans totalement enfermer ; elle filtre, sélectionne et capture. Cette ambivalence est essentielle dans Zantray, où la matière semble chercher à traverser la structure qui la contraint.

Cette lecture peut être mise en relation avec la notion d’îléité développée par le géographe Joël Bonnemaison. Pour Bonnemaison, l’île ne se réduit pas à une situation géographique d’isolement : l’îléité désigne une expérience culturelle et symbolique du territoire, une manière d’habiter un espace marqué par la rupture, mais aussi par les circulations qui permettent de la dépasser. L’île se pense alors moins comme une entité fermée que comme un réseau de lieux reliés entre eux.

La grille de Zantray peut précisément être envisagée comme ce réseau de relations, qui rappelle le « Tout-Monde » d’Édouard Glissant.

Cette grille convoque également l’histoire de la modernité artistique. Dans son essai fondateur « Grilles » (Grids, 1979), Rosalind Krauss montre combien la grille constitue l’un des emblèmes du modernisme : elle affirme la planéité, l’autonomie du champ pictural et une volonté de soustraire l’œuvre à la nature, au récit et à la représentation. La grille moderniste tend ainsi à établir un espace autonome, abstrait et organisé selon ses propres lois.

Or, chez Gaëlle Choisne, cette histoire de la grille est déplacée et retournée. La grille n’est plus le signe d’un espace autonome qui se détournerait du monde ; elle est, au contraire, profondément engagée dans le monde, dans ses matières, ses histoires et ses rapports de pouvoir. Là où Krauss identifie dans la grille moderniste une volonté d’éloignement de la nature et du réel, Zantray réintroduit précisément ce que le modernisme avait cherché à tenir à distance : le corps, le territoire, la matière organique, le végétal, la mémoire, mais aussi l’histoire coloniale et les économies d’exploitation.

La grille devient alors une structure contaminée. Elle n’est plus parfaitement régulière ni neutre : elle est traversée, recouverte et débordée par la matière et par les matériaux. Le réseau géométrique est gagné par une matière qui semble croître à travers lui. La forme abstraite rencontre ainsi une matérialité organique qui la déstabilise. La grille ne contrôle plus entièrement ce qu’elle contient : elle devient le lieu même d’une lutte entre ordre et débordement, capture et circulation, enfermement et prolifération.

Cette tension fait écho au titre Zantray. Les « entrailles » sont ce qui est habituellement caché, intérieur, enfoui. Ici, elles deviennent visibles. Elles remontent à la surface sous la forme d’une matière presque corporelle, chargée de couleurs, de traces et de fragments, dessinant ainsi un territoire, une géographie visuelle.

Les cheveux synthétiques renvoient aux pratiques de coiffure et de transformation du corps dans les cultures afrodescendantes, mais ils évoquent également quelque chose de beaucoup plus quotidien et trivial : le cheveu tombé, abandonné au sol et devenu déchet — un moment autobiographique.

Le cheveu devient alors un reliquat d’identité. Il conserve quelque chose du corps tout en étant séparé de celui-ci. Il est à la fois présence et absence. Sa matérialité synthétique ajoute une autre dimension : il s’agit aussi d’un matériau produit, transformé et acheté. Le corps lui-même apparaît pris dans des économies de représentation, de beauté, de consommation et de transformation.

Cette transformation concerne également les photographies miniatures enfermées dans des pochons. Ces petits contenants introduisent une économie du secret et de la valeur. Ils peuvent évoquer le transport, le commerce et la conservation, mais aussi les circuits clandestins, notamment le « deal » et le trafic de drogue. L’objet photographique se trouve alors pris dans une ambiguïté entre souvenir intime et marchandise, archive et produit, mémoire et valeur d’échange.

Le pochon devient ainsi une métaphore particulièrement forte de la négociation de l’identité. Ce qui est contenu peut être montré ou dissimulé ; ce qui circule peut être transformé selon le contexte. L’identité elle-même apparaît comme quelque chose que l’on transporte, que l’on expose, que l’on protège ou que l’on négocie. La photographie miniature ne restitue pas une identité complète : elle n’en conserve qu’un fragment.

Ainsi, la grille de Zantray est simultanément filet de pêche, réseau insulaire, clôture et dispositif moderniste. Elle condense plusieurs histoires et plusieurs régimes de représentation. Elle porte la promesse de l’abondance tout en rappelant les mécanismes de capture, de propriété et d’exploitation. Elle évoque l’île comme espace de rupture tout en dessinant un réseau de circulations — une cartographie du Tout-Monde, une carte affective et matérielle des circulations. Elle reprend enfin une forme centrale de la modernité artistique tout en la chargeant d’une histoire située, caribéenne et postcoloniale.
