Chiu Huai-Hsuan (n. 1987, Taipéi, Taiwán) obtuvo el Máster en el Departamento de Escultura de la Universidad Nacional de las Artes de Taipéi y actualmente reside y trabaja en Taipéi.
Su práctica se centra en la elaboración de escritorios, sillas, libros y estanterías en miniatura, realizados a partir de diversas maderas e incorporando mecanismos cinéticos que activan estos objetos. A través de tales dispositivos, la artista regula su movimiento, generando una tensión sostenida entre control e imprevisibilidad, y estableciendo un ciclo continuo de acción y variación.
En los últimos años, Chiu ha profundizado en las cualidades intrínsecas del material. Los gabinetes y libros conservan las vetas y tonalidades naturales de la madera, evidenciando las huellas temporales inscritas en el crecimiento del árbol. Estas marcas son preservadas y reconfiguradas en micro-libros, cajones y armarios, resultado de un meticuloso proceso de corte, ensamblaje, incrustación, adhesión y pulido realizado por la propia artista. Desde su escala íntima, la obra despliega una perspectiva macroscópica: más que estanterías, sus estructuras se convierten en metáforas de un bosque, narrando los ciclos y trayectorias de la vida.
Entre los reconocimientos recibidos se encuentran el One Art Award (2020) y el Horizon Award de la 15ª edición del Vulon Wood Sculpture Award (2011). Sus exposiciones individuales más relevantes incluyen The Hidden Traces in Tree(YIRI ARTS, Taipéi, 2022), The Lin’s Next Door – Let’s Meet in the Study Room (The Lin Family Mansion and Garden, Taipéi, 2019) y Micro-Theater: Handwriting after X Erasing X Elapsing (Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center, Tainan, 2016).
Ha participado asimismo en exposiciones colectivas como New Memories in Holiday (Artside Gallery, Seúl, 2022), Mini Artwork: Heritage (Nan Gallery, Taipéi, 2021) y Tiny Movement (YIRI ARTS, Taichung, 2015). Sus obras forman parte de colecciones institucionales como el Bureau of Cultural Affairs de Taichung, el Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center de Tainan y el Bureau of Cultural Affairs del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Kaohsiung.
Chiu Huai-Hsuan was born in 1987 in Taipei, Taiwan. She has an Master's degree in Sculpture Department from Taipei National University of the Arts, and currently resides in Taipei. Her works involve crafting miniature desks, chairs, books, and bookshelves from various types of wood, incorporating kinetic mechanisms to make these objects come to life. Through these kinetic devices, she controls the movement of the objects, leading to a dynamic interplay between control and unpredictability, creating a continuous cycle. In recent years, Chiu Huai-Hsuan has placed a greater emphasis on the inherent qualities of her materials. The cabinets and books in her artworks retain the natural textures and colors of the wood, showcasing the time-traces left by the trees. These traces are carefully preserved and displayed in micro-sized books, drawers, and cabinets, following meticulous cutting, joining, inlaying, bonding, and polishing by the artist herself. Chiu Huai-Hsuan's work presents a macroscopic perspective through its miniature form, narrating the journey of life. Her creations are not just bookshelves but also symbolize a forest.
Chiu Huai-Hsuan’s works received One Art Award in 2020 and Horizon Award by 15th Vulon Wood Sculpture Award in 2011.
