This day belongs to us

Clare Dudeney’s collection, This Day Belongs to Us, brings together fabric and ceramic weavings developed during her residency in the Lake District. The works are inspired by time spent in nature - studying rock formations in rivers and caves, observing the way light shifts through trees and glimmers across water. These experiences are translated into woven forms using both yarn and clay.

For her fabric weavings, Clare begins with line drawings that capture shapes found in the landscape. She builds each piece by combining many fine yarns, pairing colours to reflect moods, memories, or fleeting moments. The meeting of warp and weft creates small, shimmering marks that hint at movement and the changing quality of light.

In her ceramic works, soft extruded clay is hand-woven into looping forms that balance structure with playfulness. Once fired, these pieces retain the energy of the gestures used to create them. Clare layers bright glazes over earthy tones - browns, terracottas, ochres, and soft neutrals - experimenting with glossy and matte finishes to evoke the textures of the natural world.

Titles draw on fragments of poetry and writings about nature that resonate with each piece, with a particular nod to the poetry of Anne Michaels. This Day Belongs to Us invites reflection on the subtle, ever-changing moments that shape each day.
