On view at the Anderson Ranch Art Center Patton-Malott gallery from September 10,2026 to October 30, 2026.This exhibition brings together butterfly-wing portraits from Benjamin Timpson’sIlluminated Lives with new experiments in glass, resin, and light. The portraits honorlives shaped by resilience and loss, while the newer works expand the inquiry intotransparency, fragility, and transformation. Layered materials bend and refract light,suggesting both protection and exposure, and marking a new chapter in an ongoingmeditation on memory, survival, and metamorphosis.
Benjamin Timpson is an artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography,sculpture, and painting, with a focus on themes of memory, resilience, and culturalsurvival. He is an Associate Professor of Photography in the School of Art at ArizonaState University. Timpson’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States andinternationally, including solo exhibitions at Lisa Sette Gallery and the Tucson Museumof Art, where his work was acquired for the permanent collection. His ongoingseriesIlluminated Lives employs deconstructed butterfly wings to create luminousportraits that honor Indigenous women and environmental defenders, weaving togethermaterial experimentation, storytelling, and social justice. A Yale-Smithsonian PoynterFellow, Timpson has received recognition for both his artistic innovation and hiscommitment to collaborative practice. He earned his M.F.A. from Indiana University.
