Before turning to art, Wang worked as a documentary filmmaker, remaining deeply interested in the narrative capabilities of the camera. The transition from film to photography opened a certain spontaneity within his artistic practice that he fully embraced. Upon encountering a compelling subject, Wang places it intuitively before capturing it, often resulting in uncluttered compositions imbued with the enthusiasm of the artist's initial impulse that gradually reveal deeper underlying messages. His early work conveys palpable anxiety and a quest for self-reflection, while more recent pieces explore themes of parenthood, the passage of time as well as philosophical reflections on death, renewal, and the cycles of life.
Above all else, Wang's work is hopeful. The artist insists on finding and showcasing hope in everyday life. Many pieces in this selection grapple with themes of resilience, regeneration and healing. Notably, two pieces originate from a series titled What You Found Only Exists in Another World (2018), in which the artist employed visual calembours, linking a grape branch to a tree and a piece of cabbage to an iceberg. By drawing parallels between small-scale and large-scale, between mundane and nature, between food and landscape, Wang underscores the interconnectedness of all things, inspiring respect and gratitude for the beauty and survival of even the simplest forms of life. This playful gesture points to the delicate balance between everyday life and broader ecological and existential stakes we collectively face and the resolute conviction that hope might be found in the quotidian.
Wang's photographs often feature horizon lines, which functions in his work as a conceptual means of proposing both a spatial and temporal link between his subject and a landscape, or any environment in which an object exists. This allows him to suggest realms both beneath and beyond the frame. Chih-Chien Wang, born in Taiwan, has lived in Montreal since 2002 after completing a master's degree in Studio Arts at Concordia University, where he is now an associate professor in photography. His artistic achievements include solo exhibitions at venues like the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Darling Foundry, and the Mississauga Art Gallery, as well as awards such as the 2017 Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography and the Prix Louis-Comtois. Positions Art Fair would be the first public presentation of his artwork in Berlin since his 2016 exhibition Under Two Lights at Künstlerhaus Bethanien.Im Rahmen der Positions Berlin Art Fair in Berlin präsentiert Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain stolz den bedeutenden taiwanesisch-kanadischen Künstler Chih-Chien Wang. Viele Werke dieser Auswahl ringen mit Themen wie Widerstandskraft, Regeneration und Heilung. Zwei Arbeiten stammen aus einer Serie mit dem Titel What You Found Only Exists in Another World (2018), in der der Künstler visuelle Kalibrierungen vornahm und dabei einen Traubenzweig mit einem Baum und ein Stück Kohl mit einem Eisberg verband. Wangs Fotografien enthalten häufig Horizontlinien, die in seinem Werk als konzeptionelles Mittel fungieren, um eine räumliche und zeitliche Verbindung zwischen seinem Motiv und einer Landschaft oder einer Umgebung, in der ein Objekt existiert, herzustellen. Auf diese Weise kann er sowohl unter als auch außerhalb des Bildes liegende Gegenden andeuten.
