INTO THE LIGHT

BASTIAN London is delighted to announce Into The Light an online presentation which brings together a tightly curated selection of works which focus on the compositional interplay between light and dark. Ranging in media and scale, from Emma Stibbon’s monumental four panelled woodcut Caldera Overlook, to Wim Wenders’ polaroid snap shot of the New York night-line each work experiments with luminosity to create dynamic tonal contrasts.

The presentation is anchored by two important neon light works by Dan Flavin, Untitled, 1964 and Untitled (for Prudence and her new baby), 1992. Considered one of the pioneers of neon art, Flavin’s installations test and challenge the limitations of light while engaging in the sculptural possibilities of neon. Subverting the mundane consideration of manufactured fluorescent tubes Flavin's experience-orientated installations diffused light into their surrounding spaces and laid the foundations for what we now consider to be ‘immersive’ art.

Into The Light brings together a dynamic body of works which all seek to harness the universality of light to manipulate both subject and medium. In its many various forms, light has been a compelling thematic tool re-visited by artists across the centuries and will continue to serve artists even in the darkest hours.
