This exhibition brings together a new group of paintings and prints that feel very true to what Victoria Achache has always done, while also pushing things slightly further. Her work sits somewhere between abstraction and figuration. Figures appear, but they’re not fixed or overly defined. They feel remembered rather than observed, as if they’ve come from a passing moment or a half-formed thought.
Paintings begin with colour, shapes build, and then figures begin to emerge. You can feel that process in the work, and there’s a sense that things are being worked out on the canvas rather than imposed onto it. The sense of familiarity is palpable. Looking at works like Watchers, Passersby, or The Red Dress, there’s a quiet focus on people simply existing in space: sitting, walking, waiting. Nothing dramatic is happening, but there’s still a strong mood. Colour plays a big role in this. It holds everything together and gives the work its energy, sometimes calm, sometimes slightly tense. This is typical of Achache’s work, and something I greatly admire.
The exhibition is on display at The Gallery at Green & Stone from 1–13 June 2026.
