Citra Semesta: Images of the Universe presents the works of Indonesia’s leading modern artists—Affandi, Ahmad Sadali, Arie Smit, Gregorius Sidharta Soegijo, Handrio, Popo Iskandar, Salim, and Widayat, among others. Each of these artists has shaped the narrative of Indonesian modern art by capturing the country’s rich landscapes and diverse natural beauty. From Affandi’s expressive brushstrokes to Arie Smit’s vibrant depictions of tropical landscapes, the works on show range from realism to impressionism and expressionism. Each artist reinterprets the land differently, whether capturing it as is or transforming it into something abstract and emotional.
In a departure from the conventions of the white cube, our display forgoes physical walls and situates the artworks amidst lush greenery, putting the works in harmonious dialogue with the very environment that inspired them. Citra Semesta celebrates Indonesia’s land and its ability to inspire. It highlights the deep connection between the artists and their environment, showing the force of nature on their visions and artistic practices.
