Still, Life is a series of ceramic sculptures by Joe Sweeney that subvert a range of domestic objects and mass produced items. In this gestural reinterpretation, these unique handmade objects - wine bottles, crockery, jugs and vases take on an anthropomorphic quality. Romanticising the inanimate in this way, these sculptures are symbolic of a lack of human interaction felt by the artist during 2020.
The use of ceramic is a deliberate challenge to the digital age, returning to one of the most ancient of materials, and one that transcends both time and function. Each work is symbolic of a specific experience felt by the artist during his time alone in his home.
