Having arrived in Miami from Havana around 1920, Felipe Jesus Consalvos’s oeuvre wasn’t discovered until a garage sale in West Philadelphia, 20 years after his death. Totalling 750 objects – photos, furniture, musical instruments – covered in ephemera including cigar labels from his day job rolling cigars, Consalvos's satirical collages used American clichés to hoist the culture on its own petard.
Consalvos’ work has been exhibited internationally, including Kunsthal Rotterdam and The Museum of Old and New Art (Tasmania). Collections include Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, American Folk Art Museum (New York) and High Museum (Atlanta).
Prices range from £3,000 to £25,000.
