Returning to the practice of archiving the self, the Pin Calacal (b.1988) preserves essence and meaning through the deterioration of the body. Here, she embraces the exhaustive condition of living while consciously avoiding romanticizing it. Mounds of clothes and clusters of hair take over a bed—a visual metaphor for the unending clutter and the pending chores that only pile up in the course of time. Calacal has always been fixated on control, where the physical body becomes a device that holds things together. However, in this exhibition, Calacal extends the practice beyond herself, evoking a desire to honor her relationships with others and hopefully, fostering new ones.
