“All Art Was Once Contemporary.”
In celebration of our 40th anniversary, Paul Hughes Fine Arts is presenting
a unique selling exhibition “Back To The Future” featuring museum quality
Pre-Columbian textiles from our collection in dialogue with 20th and 21st
century South American artists. Never before have these artists been shown
together in one place, and this unique event revels in both the diversities and
unities of our exhibition program. The show commemorates the gallery’s
history while also looking forward to its future.
“It is amazing to stand here 40 years later and to look back on the journey
that our galleries program has taken. Am so grateful to the artists, collectors,
museums, curators and colleagues who have accompanied me on this ride
and look forward to what the next decades will bring.” Paul Hughes
Since the success of our first exhibition at Pembridge Square Notting Hill in
June 1983 , it could not have been foreseen what a fortuitous rollercoaster it
would be and continues to be.
The artworks in “ Back To The Future” are created by artists spanning a
period of over 4000 years of artistic creativity from South America and the
wider Latin world, which includes works by Jandyra Waters, Delba Marcolini
,Sachiko Koshikoku and Amparo De La Sota. All the works exhibited are
realised by female artists from the ancient world to the modern era, the
selection of modern paintings and textiles attest to the presence of female
creativity in South American arts that spans a time frame of 4000 years is
testament to the enduring ingenuity of South American female innovators to
express themselves in a most poetic and sophisticated abstract manner.
This exhibition is intended to illustrate how works from different periods and
cultures are visually interwoven despite their diverse chronological and
geographical background, whether it is an affinity in aesthetics or intentionality
imbued within the living artist’s creations and direct exposure to the
Pre-Columbian world.
It will enable us to compare artworks, providing us new and fresh perspectives,
allowing us a new way of looking at events, situations, and peoples.
By analysing artworks from the past and looking at their details, we can
rewind time and experience what a time period different from our own was like
and how artists today are inspired by the past. The living artists and we the
curators believe, that such a project presents ancient art more intimately.
Art history becomes more accessible, less of a place where you are told a truth
that you have to learn and more of an immersive experience that you grow
with, updating the visual language of the historical in alignment with
contemporary practice, providing new interpretations and parallels.
