ART TAIPEI 2023

Our first presentation in Taiwan since 2020, and our first stand-alone art fair booth at Art Taipei 2023, Elemental Shapes comprises rare works by three 20th-century Indonesian abstract artists - Fadjar Sidik, Umi Dachlan and Nashar.

A bird in flight - soaring freedom

A majestic mountain reaching into the sky – spiritual enlightenment

The soothing cascades of breaking waves – everyday cosmic order

The works of the three artists represent a distilled view of the world around us through shapes that are elemental. Through triangles, squares, rhombuses and other primaeval symbols representing the cosmos, Fadjar Sidik, Umi Dachlan and Nashar's works present seemingly simple but positively profound imageries of nature predicated upon a distinctly Indonesian cultural worldview.

A unique characteristic of Indonesian post-war art is the way its representative artists evade binary categories – western/Oriental, abstract/representational, natural/artifice – to convey a distinctly Indonesian cultural worldview in their works underpinned by powerful imageries of nature.
