Duncan Thurlby

Duncan Thurlby is a UK-based metal sculptor, known for his distinctive blend of character and craftsmanship. Since graduating from Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1990, he has worked full-time as a sculptor, developing an extensive body of work for both public and private clients.

Early in his career, Duncan was commissioned by high-profile entertainment venues including Chelsea Football Club, Camden Palace, and Chicago Rock Café, creating bold, large-scale works that helped shape the visual identities of these iconic spaces. As his practice evolved, he shifted his focus toward gallery sculpture and private commissions, with pieces now residing in collections across the UK, America, and Australia.

His work draws inspiration from the natural world, interpreted with wit and imagination. From his ever-popular stylised hounds to pelicans, toucans, giant conker shells, and even alligators, Duncan’s sculpture is animated by personality and a playful sense of form. His large-scale water sculptures bring together structure and fluidity, offering architectural presence with organic flair.

Each piece is made using a range of traditional hand-working techniques. Rather than replicate nature, Duncan invites his materials to evolve through an instinctive, “unnatural evolution” a process that prioritises expression over precision, feeling over formula.

Duncan’s work will be exhibited as part of Affordable Art at Canwood Gallery running from 31st July to 22nd September 2025, open Thursday to Sunday.
