Under the Same Sun, presented by Magnum Gallery in Paris, brings together photographs by Herbert List and Zied Ben Romdhane in a visual dialogue that spans nearly a century. Through images of the Mediterranean coast, the exhibition explores themes of identity, desire, belonging, and exile. List’s photographs, made between the 1930s and 1950s in Greece and Italy during his exile from Nazi Germany, evoke myth, antiquity, and sensuality through timeless depictions of bodies and landscapes. Ben Romdhane’s contemporary photographs of Tunisia, many from his award-winning series
The Escape, offer a poetic yet uneasy portrait of youth navigating the uncertainties of post-revolution society. Although shaped by vastly different political and historical contexts, the two photographers’ works resonate across time, transforming the Mediterranean into both a physical setting and a psychological landscape, where personal and collective experiences intersect.
