By trade a shoe-maker and
house-painter,
Hector Hyppolite
was a third-generation vodou priest -
or Houngan - whose chicken-feather paintings of island spirits and
rituals were spotted by Philippe
Thoby-Marcelin and Dewitt Peters,
the American watercolourist who
ran Haiti’s only art studio.
Fêted
and promoted by the likes of
André Breton and the Cuban artist
Wilfredo Lam,
Hyppolite’s practice soon blossomed and the legend of the Haitian Matisse spread
across Europe and America.
