Kieran O'Hare is a Brooklyn-based artist exploring the fissure of culture and social consensus. Infographics, iterative narrative, and memory in the internet age are the real subject, while his pictures, both paintings and animated, are cluttered with stock characters, tropes, and memes. While he has worked in standard narrative animation -- for MTV, Adult Swim, and others -- his static and recursive work suggests storytelling without apotheosis. His earlier work spoke the visual language of maps and charts while eschewing direct interpretation -- ciphers that cannot be decoded. His recent work is similarly opaque -- character actors and dramatic stagings, often culled from internet meme-culture -- that remain steadfastly inscrutable -- precariously balanced but resolutely unresolvable.
From May 9 through 14 2023, Jonathan Miller Spies Fine Art presents Kieran O'Hare | The Lava Log. The Lava Log is a body of work that embraces both traditional oil paintings and looping animation in an immersive experience. The world of The Lava Logs is eerily familiar to our own -- slick, seductive, and Sisyphean, The Lava Log suggests looking out of the white cube's windows into a world of mundane spectacle.
The show opens for a limited engagement at 72 Warren Street, Manhattan, Tuesday, May 9, through Sunday, May 14, 11 AM - 6 PM. Please join us for an opening reception from 4 - 8 PM on Tuesday, May 9.
