Laura Limbourg (b.1996)
Laura Limbourg was born in Belgium in 1996. She
graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with a focus on painting. Limbourg
is a painter and sculptor whose work explores themes of fetishization,
colonialism, sex tourism, gender, and history, drawing inspiration from her
six-month travels in Southeast Asia. Her vivid artworks depict exotic jungle
plants, ancient Asian religious iconography, and persecuted sex workers in
urban settings. Often portraying confident women alongside fierce spirit
animals like tigers or haunting floating heads such as Medusa, her fantastical
imagery challenges stereotypical gender norms. Her wild, explicit, and
provocative style evokes empowerment and liberation, skillfully using symbolism
and nudity to engage viewers in a critical examination of complex societal
issues.
She was awarded the 13th Prize of Art Critique for Young Painting by Galerie Kritiků in 2020. Her most important solo exhibitions include Dragon and His Tale, YIRI ARTS, Taipei (2022); Hump in Honey, Taro Gallery, Prague (2022); and Gimme a Big Great Smile, Nová galerie, Prague (2020). Recent group exhibitions include Devine, HOFA, London (2022); No Drama, Chemistry Gallery, Prague (2021); Kaleidoscope, YIRI ARTS, Taipei (2021); and Please Wait to Be Called, Ply Gallery, London (2019).
