Symmetrical diagrams of circular forms, suns and moons cut in half by diagonal lines, ray of lights, and mirrored in water. Organic and otherworldly, the works explore cyclical movements: light, shadow, darkness, light. Even his most abstract paintings are more schemes or abstractions from ideas – not pure abstraction so much as representations of unseen worlds, or the non-visible aspects of nature. Employing the oldest technique of printmaking, the artist explores repetition and variation through his meticulous wood cuts transferred to cotton paper. When these meditations on paper start flickering, Funck’s lines appear almost like an avalanche sending ripples through the image plane.
