Wanderings

BY ANNE HANGER

Through the visual language of geometric minimalism, Hanger distills elements from her routine practice of watching the sun rise from the Blue Ridge Mountains and set behind the Appalachian Mountains near her home and studio. As she sits and observes the landscape around her, her eye wanders across directional patterns, nature’s organic movements, and the changing light. Hanger abstractly mimics the dynamic and cyclical beauty of the natural world, channeling a similar meditative viewing experience through her paintings.

“In this group of works I am creating simple compositions that, like a beautiful landscape, transport the viewer to a mental space conducive to silence and reflection and/or to be reminded of the joy and mystery of being alive.” - Hanger

Following the principles of the Minimalist movement, Hanger focuses on extracting only the most essential elements from each landscape, and she applies a careful and disciplined approach to her image construction. Her striking and evocative colors meet simple configurations of shapes and a variation of surface textures to include sand, glossy and matte finishes. Hanger creates a sense of order combining these elements with carefully layered, tight gestures. Her commitment to each form field extends beyond the painting’s surface to wrap around its edges, providing an all-encompassing experience similar to being in nature.

“Painting slowly and with intention satisfies my hunger for a slower, gentler world.” - Hanger

Wanderings presents Hanger’s pragmatic and collage-like approach to painting, highlighting the importance of process and color theory in physical execution, while concurrently igniting the ephemeral moments and sentiment that being one with nature provides.
