Dr. Paula Anta (b. 1977, Madrid) is an internationally recognised Spanish contemporary artist whose practice moves between photography, installation and environmental intervention. At the heart of her work is an enduring investigation into the relationship between nature and artificiality, landscape and human intervention, beauty and disruption.
Anta does not approach photography simply as documentation. Her images are often the culmination of carefully conceived interventions made directly within a landscape or architectural environment. Using natural and found materials, sculptural forms, colour and constructed elements, she temporarily alters a place before photographing it. The resulting image occupies an intriguing territory between reality and fiction: the landscape remains recognisable, yet has been transformed into something psychological, symbolic and sometimes quietly unsettling.
Central to her practice is the understanding of landscape as a cultural construction, something upon which human histories, desires and anxieties are continually projected. Nature in Anta's work is neither passive nor decorative. It can overwhelm, reclaim, resist and regenerate. Equally, traces of human intervention appear within it as markers of our desire to control, order and reshape the natural world.
Her acclaimed photographic series have explored these ideas across vastly different geographical and cultural environments. Travel itself is important to her methodology, allowing Anta to encounter landscapes beyond the familiar and to examine how different societies inhabit, interpret and transform their environments.
Her work frequently possesses an extraordinary visual beauty, but this beauty carries an underlying tension. Rather than delivering an overt ecological message, Anta allows the viewer to experience the seduction of the image first. Questions of environmental fragility, memory, transformation and humanity's impact upon the natural world emerge more gradually.
This is particularly evident in works in which tangled vegetation and apparently chaotic natural growth are photographed against gold leaf. The precious, luminous surface elevates forms that might ordinarily be overlooked or dismissed. Anta has described this investigation as a search for beauty within forms we do not inherently consider beautiful. These accumulations of vegetation have also been connected in her thinking to larger patterns — from neural networks to structures found throughout the natural and cosmic world.
Anta received her PhD in Fine Arts, cum laude, from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2015, completing her European Doctorate in collaboration with the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and the University of Saarbrücken. Her rigorous academic and theoretical background is deeply embedded within the conceptual foundations of her artistic practice.
Her work has received significant international recognition and has been exhibited at institutions and platforms including the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, Dakar Biennale, LagosPhoto, Art D'Égypte, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Matadero Madrid, Real Jardín Botánico, CCCB Barcelona and the Spanish Academy in Rome, as well as across several editions of the international photography festival PHotoESPAÑA.
Anta has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Culture Prize of the Community of Madrid, the XI Pilar Citoler International Biennial Prize for Contemporary Photography, the Mallorca Contemporary Photography Award and the International Photography Award of the UNESCO Centre of Extremadura. Her international residencies and scholarships have included periods at the Spanish Academy in Rome, the Spanish College in Paris and the Transversia residency programme in Senegal.
