Born in 1994 in Osaka, Japan, Shinya Azuma currently lives and works in Kyoto. He received his MFA from Kyoto University of the Arts. Recent solo exhibitions include presentations in Shanghai and Paris, as well as Human. Human? Human! at COHJU (Kyoto). His works are held in significant public and private collections, including the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and the Bao Foundation (Hong Kong), among others in Japan and internationally.

Working with a formally direct and chromatically bold visual language, Azuma constructs scenes that resist melodrama. Emotion is neither exaggerated nor suppressed; humor and discomfort coexist. The works are at once comic and disquieting, maintaining an ironic distance that avoids both moralism and self-pity. Meaning remains suspended rather than declared. Belonging to a generation shaped by Japan’s prolonged post-bubble economic stagnation, Azuma reflects a social context in which conventional ideals of masculinity and achievement have gradually lost their persuasive force. Rather than staging overt critique, he internalizes these conditions. His subjects endure, hesitate, and persist. What emerges is a post-heroic mode of subjectivity—defined less by aspiration than by acute self-awareness.

Presented within the Insights sector, this focused exhibition situates Azuma’s practice within a broader regional and generational framework. Across East Asia and beyond, rapid modernization, economic precarity, and digitally mediated self-consciousness have contributed to similarly introspective forms of subjectivity. Azuma articulates this condition not through spectacle, but through carefully staged moments of vulnerability and quiet absurdity.
