Brian De Jesus: "La esperanza es lo último que se pierde, yo también tengo sueños" (Hope is the last thing you lose, I have dreams too)
All enquiries to info@hope93.com Brian De Jesus (b. 1996, Caracas, Venezuela) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersections of personal history, migration, and collective identity within the Venezuelan diaspora. His experiences as an immigrant addressing the marginalisation of Venezuelans at home and abroad. Something felt by so many people of all backgrounds in unfamiliar surroundings. Drawing on Caracas’ Tuki culture, a symbol of resilience and survival, Brian challenges society's and institutional expectations through cultural references in his art. Central to his practice are themes of materiality, labour, and luck. His installations, paintings, and performances underscore class division, contrasting privilege and instability, and expanding conversations about the harsh realities of migration and labour. In doing this, he creates spaces for the unseen to be seen.
Brian has been awarded several fellowships and residencies including the Travers Smith CSR Art Programme 2023-24, Manos Creando - Gaswork Latin American Artist Workshop, 2023 and the studio Programme – Conditions x ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), 2023. He has been included in exhibitions at Gasworks and Ambika p3 in London.
