Josh Thomson, 'Re-Connecting' at Cass Art Glasgow, June 27th to July 8th

"These portraits, painted between 2022-2024, came out of a need, a desire, to form better connections with the people around me, and challenge myself to make new ones too. I pushed myself to work more from direct observation of the person in my studio. I want to get to know the people around me better through the act of painting them, and in return I hope they get to know me a little better too. I hope to reveal in the portraits my admiration, respect and empathy for the people depicted."

"I believe firmly in paying attention to things. By observing the people close to me whilst making their portrait, I hope to notice and capture every facet of their personality and translate that into the painting, making the most honest and authentic picture of that person. You have to start from a place of empathy and authenticity in order to make the truest portrait possible."
