Jo Ann Callis created her Black Sun series in 1976, consisting of near-silhouette images of bodies lounging poolside under a glaring sun, inspired by her fascination with film noir shadows. As the work evolved, she allowed faint details to surface in the figures, embracing what she described as the “light and unsettling” discomfort of bright sunlight on white cement.
