Artist Statement

These works are a series looking at what I have always been drawn to: order in chaos. We are born to be distracted. Internally, there is a world of chaos that can only be calmed by paying attention and giving great love to this part of oneself. This must be the approach to navigating a chaotic society and outside world as well.

I am thankful painting found me. Painting is my way of cutting through the disturbance of noise and creating my own inner flow of stillness—for in the silence are stacks of memories or versions of myself that become the foundation of my work. Then I find how best to fit them all together.

Each work begins with an outline, one simple, methodical line connecting to another. Once the composition is realized, I move into the second phase, where I purposely act more erratic and spontaneous. It is the blending of the two realities that I connect with and feel most honest about.
