Kazumi Kamae (b 1966)

Kazumi Kamae is a Japanese ceramist known for her distinctive Art Brut sculptures, whose dominating futuristic forms speak authoritatively when she cannot. Born in 1966, she has been a member of Atelier Yamanami since 1985, where she began her artistic journey.

Kamae creates her sculptures by forming a base with clay and then attaching small clay pellets, roughly the size of a grain of rice, to the surface. This meticulous process means it can take up to two months to complete a single piece. Her works often depict figures and scenes inspired by her personal experiences and emotions.

Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, including Thinking of Japan, A Meditation at Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York (2023), New Images of Man at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles (2020), and Labor of Love at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland (2017).
