Rafael Rangel (1978, New York). He currently lives in Miami.
His work recognizes our perpetual relationship with standardized utilitarian objects that place them on a plane of abstraction. Through sculpture, photography and painting, Rafael investigates how the visual language established by mega-industries affects our lives and how we identify with it to a point that becomes implicit.
Rangel's work has been exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Caracas. Interoceanic Museum of the Panama Canal, Panama City, Panama. Coral Gables Museum, Miami, Florida. Galería de Arte Nacional, Caracas and Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas. He received the Pérez Mujica Award at the 66th Arturo Michelena Biennial Salon, Braulio Salazar Museum, Valencia, the National Award to the Young Venezuelan Artist Armando Reverón of the Venezuelan Association of Plastic Artists AVAP and the Award of Excellence The Circle of the Pratt Institute.
His work has been acquired by Mana Contemporary, Newark, NJ. Mercantil Collection, Caracas. Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Universidad Simon Bolivar and Universidad Metropolitana, Caracas. Local Venezuelan authorities commissioned him to produce large-scale public art sculptures on Margarita Island and Sabana Grande Boulevard in Caracas.
