Adi Toch is a London based artist-metalsmith. A lecturer at the RCA, Toch’s works sit in major private and public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Crafts Council, The Goldsmiths’ Company, Museum of London, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, National Museums Scotland, National Museum Wales, Ulster Museum Belfast (all UK) and The Jewish Museum, New York. Toch was a finalist in the first Loewe Craft Prize and is recipient of major awards including a Gold Award from The Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council, UK and The European Prize for Applied Arts, 2018. In 2021, she was commissioned by the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Gilbert Trust to create a response to the restitution of an historic gold ewer from The Gilbert Collection to Turkey. With traditional techniques and an experimental sensibility, Toch works metal into mirrors, vessels and hybrid forms combined with stone, glass and wood. Across her objects, metal’s capacity for containment and reflection are apparent. Beginning as flat sheets, vessels are treated in diverse ways revealing the material’s sensory and sonic qualities. While her mirrors investigate the boundary between metal and warped image.
Toch’s work is informed by research into historic objects, such as Mediterranean oil lamps and scroll jars, as well as collaboration with museums and artists from other disciplines. She describes metal as 'more malleable and communicative than people assume.’ Her surfaces range from polished, intricately marked to mineralised after burial. In works such as her
Shrouded series, Toch collaborates with nature’s mark-making, burying pieces in the earth for prolonged periods to develop polychromatic patinas.
