No Man's Art Gallery looks forward to presenting a solo presentation of the SPECTRUM series by South African artist
Jamal Nxedlana. The solo booth shows the artist's newest series of images that continues his exploration of topics such as race, masculinity, post-colonialism and consumer culture, with a particular focus on the representation of the black body in fashion photography. Nxedlana is a visual artist and cultural organizer who is recognized for establishing initiatives and projects that support the South African arts community, including Bubblegum Club, a digital platform and culture agency that promotes innovative work and emerging cultural workers.
We will also be showing a Special Edition by Dutch photographer
Desiré van den Berg alongside Jamal Nxedlana. Van den Berg traveled to North Africa for a series on permaculture: which stands for permanent + culture. It is mostly known for its sustainable agricultural approach by regenerating soil, but permaculture is rather an ethical philosophy about restoring the harmony between humanity and nature. The aim is to build a civilization that can survive forever - as opposed to our current way of living, causing resource depletion and irreversible damage.
Tunisia is one of the places on earth that is impacted by climate change first, and most, because of its location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara desert. Under threat of severe drought, quickly rising temperatures and sea levels, the permaculture farms van den Berg visited seem to be thriving.
