MONIKA KÁRÁNDI - JUST A MATTER OF TIME
JULY 20TH - AUGUST 10TH

In "Just a Matter of Time," Mónika Kárándi explores the interplay between human endurance and the timeless resilience of the Welwitschia Mirabilis. These living fossils, which date back to the age of dinosaurs and can survive for 1500-2000 years, symbolize fortitude and the passage of time. Kárándi’s paintings depict human figures intertwined with this ancient plant, presenting different versions of endurance and survival Welwitschia Mirabilis, a two-leafed specimen that appears to have multiple leaves due to its torn and frayed edges, serves as a powerful metaphor in Kárándi’s work. These frazzled histories are markers of time and fortitude, representing the timeless struggle between love and hate, past and present, endurance and survival.

The artist empowers her figures with the living time of Welwitschia, suggesting that with enough time, they can live their destiny fully, bearing the consequences of their decisions.Kárándi’s work is characterized by its bold use of colour, dynamic composition, and intricate detail. Her paintings blend elements of realism with abstract expressionism, creating a unique visual language that speaks to the viewer on multiple levels. The Welwitschia Mirabilis serves as a powerful metaphor in her work, representing the timeless struggle between love and hate, present and future, endurance and survival.“ This exhibition is a culmination of my reflections on how we perceive the world around us and the realities we construct for ourselves. By empowering my figures with the living time of Welwitschia, I hope to convey the idea that our decisions, both good and bad, are often shaped by the time we have.”
