Over the course of his career, photographer Rodney Smith (1947–2016) developed a distinct visual and emotional language. Across six photographs, Gilman Contemporary has curated three black-and-white pairings that show the depth and beauty of Smith’s work. Each image serves as a visual reflection of the close friendship L’Anne Gilman shared with the artist. Moving beyond the fashion imagery for which Smith is widely known, Gilman Contemporary is celebrating a more contemplative side of his practice. The works featured at AIPAD 2026 are composed testaments to Smith’s poetic sensibility and humanistic approach to image-making.
