Horst, one of the greatest fashion photographers of all time, originally studied architecture in Hamburg and served as an apprentice to Le Corbusier in Paris. He later switched to photography with the help of his friend and mentor George Hoyningen-Huene, a fashion photographer working for Vogue. Following in his peer’s footsteps, Horst succeeded Huene as head photographer at Vogue in 1935.

This remarkable photograph was taken at Horst’s home in Oyster Bay on Long Island, a house he designed and built himself. It became a celebrated salon, one where many talents of the time came to visit and stay. Artistic geniuses like Salvador Dal., “Coco” Chanel, No.l Coward and others with a true creative spirit were always welcomed by Horst.
