The catalyst for this series of ‘Vault’ paintings originated from an image of a building by the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. The structure’s step-like foundation sent me on a path that led to the first Vault painting, Vault (green). After expressing the form on canvas, I immediately knew that I wanted to explore a series of paintings based on this composition.
The Vault form both protrudes from and sinks into the picture plane as it gets closer to the center of the painting. I became fascinated by how altering the scale and color affects the physical and emotional impact of the form throughout multiple paintings. I find the depictions evoke enigmatic structures from an undiscovered time or place.
