RHIZOME

ISABEL PAGET

Spotlight Art are excited to present ISABEL PAGET’s inaugural solo exhibition entitled RHIZOME. On display over three floors will be new artworks in a diverse range of media, including traditional paintings and works on paper, with progressive mediums, transitioning towards engineered objects and kinetic sculpture, engaging with metal and glass, aided with advanced computer technologies. Paget’s oeuvre develops conceptual studies into series such as Aliquid, Continuum, Convergence, Dark Matter, Dilation, Entanglement, String Theory and Vortex. Featured artworks include Time Blind a kinetic, motorised painting depicting an assemblage of clocks symbolically painted directly onto a window blind. Sands of Time is an interactive spherical sculpture encasing a complex network of intersecting hourglasses.

Considering art as a science of invention and experimentation, Paget’s investigations into the evolution of temporal perception is key to her creative practise. Artworks reflect upon the postmodernist philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, versus Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity; the unification of space and time, influenced by Herman Minkowski’s 4D model of Space-Time. Further inspirations are drawn from Christian Marclay’s seminal work ‘The Clock’, with a contemporary nod to the Surrealists’ Salvador Dali and Man Ray, in the centenary year of Andre Breton’s Manifesto.

Isabel Paget (b.2000, Winchester) is an emerging multidisciplinary artist recently graduated with a first-class Honours Degree in Fine Art, Central Saint Martins University, London and a Diploma in Creative Computing, University of Arts London. Previous exhibitions include collaborations with Realdreams AI Collective, and STIK, London. Sands of Time is Paget’s second major sculpture to be featured at Burning Man, US, 2024.

‘Drawing on the metaphor of the rhizome—a botanical structure that sprawls horizontally, creating multiple, non-hierarchical points of growth—my exhibition endeavours to challenge the traditional, linear narratives of progress and time. The artworks showcased do not adhere to a single path but rather expand in various directions, exploring the multitude of ways in which technology influences and permeates our daily lives and our understanding of time and space. Through the lens of rhizomatic and algorithmic reality, art is not only the object; but also, the transformative potential of dynamic interconnected experiences.

The conceptual roots of RHIZOME trace back to the dramatic changes initiated by the four industrial revolutions. From the steam-driven mechanisms of the 18th century, which marked the inception of mechanised production, to the present's quantum strides in artificial intelligence, each revolution has progressively reshaped the landscape of human life. In RHIZOME, each artwork reflects this evolution from a linear, mechanistic view of time and production to a decentralised, interconnected web of digital and existential interactions.’ ISABEL PAGET, June 2024
