Depuis 2025, Adrian Tomine entreprend une série de dessins réalisés à l’encre et à l’aquarelle, conçus comme un journal visuel des films qu’il voit. Chaque image correspond à une séance, non comme un commentaire ou une critique, mais comme une trace, rapide, spontanée, presque intime.
Fidèle à sa pratique du carnet, Tomine y retrouve un espace plus libre, débarrassé des contraintes narratives de la bande dessinée. En quelques traits et quelques aplats de couleur, il saisit une atmosphère, un fragment, un détail, moins le film lui-même que le souvenir qu’il en reste.
Dans ces images de petit format, on retrouve la précision de son regard et son attention aux silences, aux interstices, à ces moments discrets où tout semble se jouer. Le cinéma n’y est pas représenté, il est filtré, absorbé, puis restitué sous une forme minimale, presque fragile.
"I initially started this series just as a way of keeping track of all the movies I watch, but then I realized it was fun and invigorating and inspiring to have one creative project in my life that wasn’t intended for publication, wasn’t being art directed, and wasn’t something that I was going to try to make “perfect.” I generally tried to limit myself to spending one hour or less on each image, and I tried to do complete the images right after seeing the movie. The materials are pencil, india ink, and a tiny “plein air” set of watercolors, and I made each drawing in a small Moleskine sketchbook. I ended up not being able to be comprehensive in terms of all the movies I saw over the course of the year due to time constraints, so I tried to focus mainly on new releases that I saw in the theater. And just to clarify: I have two kids, and more than a few of the movie choices were dictated by them!" Adrian Tomine.
