BUTTER 2025 | JULIAN JONES
Julian Jamaal Jones (Indianapolis, IN) is multi media artist and educator. Rooted in Black musical traditions and sacred memory, Jones blends quilt-making, photography, and sound to create works that resonate with rhythm and spirit. Drawing from gospel, hip-hop, family rituals, and cultural archives, he remixes the past and present into vibrant visual compositions.
Jones earned his BFA in Photography from Herron School of Art + Design and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studied under Chris Fraser. His work is held in the permanent collections of Cranbrook Art Museum, Richmond Art Museum, and Book Tower Detroit. Recent honors include the 2025 Restoring Hope, Restoring Trust Artist-in-Residence at Wabash College, the 2024 Black Mountain College + Arts Center Residency, and the 2022 Playground Detroit Emerging Artist Fellowship.
